b'F R O M T H E E D I T O R SDear Visions Readers:In 1952, our parent company reclaimed the name Sumitomo to form Sumitomo Shoji Kaisha, Ltd. Having just recently established a presence in the United States, our San Francisco office reflected this name change, and later that same year, Nikken New York incorporated and became Sumitomo Shoji America, Inc., giving us a bold new foothold in the American market. These important moments in 1952 all sowed the seeds of growth that we celebrate today as our beloved Sumitomo Corporation of Americas turns seventy years old. We have included a SCOA Timeline poster in this special commemorative issue ofVisions magazine to illustrate all that we have accomplished throughout these decades. In this issue, we talk with some of SCOAs leaders about the current path of our company as well as the changes they have witnessed. We truly appreciate all that these special individuals accomplished for the company, and eagerly await their triumphs just beyond the horizon. And if youve wondered to yourself just what a Visions magazine cover would have looked like back in1952 when we were first getting started, we created one for you as the back cover of this very specialanniversary edition of Visions. We even received this congratulatory message from Yo Kuwasaki (who is also the father of Mayuko Koike, wife of our EVP, CFO & CBDO Mr. Hiroyuki Jose Koike), whose rotation placed him in our San Francisco Office from 1974 to 1980: When I worked in SCOA in the 1970s, it was quite challenging time for the U.S. with confusion after the Vietnam War. However, the U.S. was very powerful in manufacturing, which gave SCOA lots of growing opportunities, especially for trading. I tried to develop businesses to the U.S. companies, and I was so impressed with these companies very open-minded and generous approach to accept new proposals even from foreign companies like SCOA as long asthey had good quality, prices and durability. I enjoyed increasing businesses in our energy sector.Remembering those days, I miss the colleagues and office in San Francisco. Now, I do hope SCOAwill continuously take the lead of SC Groups growth, taking advantage of abundant mineral resourcesand agriculture, increasing population and world-leading innovation power for decades to come.Congratulations on the 70th anniversary of SCOA.We couldnt have said it better ourselves. We hope you enjoy this issue of Visions. Heres to the next seventy years!Sincerely,The Visions Editors,Sumitomo Corporation of Americas, Corporate CommunicationsVisionsVISIONSSTAFFmagazine is published quarterly by Sumitomo Corporation of Americas,Stephen Pitalo, Managing Editor Submissions and inquiries are welcome.a wholly-owned subsidiary of SumitomoStephen.Pitalo@sumitomocorp.comCorporation, one of the worlds leading traders and distributors of commodities,Amy Babcock, Executive Editor Printed on industrial goods and consumer goods. amy.babcock@sumitomocorp.com recycled paper.Besides its role as a trader, SumitomoJewelle Yamada, Editor EmeritusCorporation is an investor in a diversejewelle-k.yamada@sumitomocorp.comrange of businesses that positionsthe company in markets with long-termJocelyn Turner, Associate Editor potential. jocelyn.turner@sumitomocorp.comMami Uno, Editorial Assistantmami.uno@sumitomocorp.com Design/Production, Stanton Design Group stantondesigngroup@mac.comhttp://sumitomocorpofamericas.com2 visions Fall 2022'
