Now, specific aviation industry challenges, such as reducing the weight of an aircraft to help mitigate carbon emissions, are creating demand for SCOA business partner Sintavia, a leading aerospace & space additive manufacturer. Seeing the bright future opening up for Sintavia that aligns with our sustainability goals for business and society, SCOA recently announced its intention to increase its overall investment in the company after just two years. We truly value SCOA as a long-term partner for Sintavia and are excited to expand our existing rela-tionship, said Sintavia CEO Brian R. Neff. With this investment, we are further aligning ourselves with a global thought leader in additive manufacturing that is committed to supporting our continued growth. If there ever has been an industry that needs to proactively adopt and embrace the environmental benefits of AM, it is the commercial aviation industry, Neff said. For years, it has been accused of turning a deaf ear to climate change and issues related to its own carbon dioxide emissions. I dont think it is immoral, but I do think commercial aviation industry, Neff said. it is immoral to not adapt as fast as you can to superior technology with a much better environmental foot-print, which is AM.Creating new pathways to increase greener aviation alternatives, Sintavia recently redesigned and opti-mized the Inconel 718 aircraft-engine bracket for AM. This test project served to explore the environmental impact of AM, resulting in a product that boasts a 20-percent weight reduction over the original part, with a 50-percent increase in durability. This bracket supports a fuel manifold at the rear of an engine, in this case a GE CF6-80C2 engine; this longer-life part can cut jet-fuel usage dramatically, and weight de-crease resulting from optimized design and improved manufacturability addresses two aspects of AMs envi-ronmental advantages. Yet another aspect, relates Neff, focuses on the processes that AM can replace.AM grows from nothing into a final part, he says.
