b'S U S T A I N A B I L I T Y C O N T I N U E DNew Policies to Protect our Planet and People In addition to the Six Key Social Issues, SC has also revised important policies to demark a stronger commit-ment to social and international compliance standards as they relate to climate change and human rights.As a step toward more aggressive action against climate change, SC Group revised its Climate Policy to reflect new targets and corporate initiatives. The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality within the entire SC Groups business by 2050. And, SC intends to help reduce carbon emissions for society as a whole by devel-oping technologies and business models with business partners and public institutions. In addition, SC Group will promote renewable energy, efficient energy utilization and fuel conversion that contributes to reducing CO 2emissions, as well as invest in hydrogen technologies and applications. The previous policy was focusing on coal-fired power in the power generation business, and thermal coal in mineral resources. The revised policy clearly applies to SCs business interests in gas-fired power generation, crude oil and natural gas as well.In reference to the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, Sumitomo Corporation Group recently established its Human Rights Policy. When engaging with a variety of stakeholders, such as employees, customers, and local residents, SC places prime importance on utmost respect for the individual, as reflected in its long-heralded Management Principles. SC now addresses the rising international expecta-tions for businesses to play a greater role in promoting respect for human rights.
